Jazz band and books

Jazz Band

I made it! I found out weeks ago, but I've been studying for finals. BC Calc and physics on the FIRST DAY - what a horrible combination. And my school decided that students would perform better with no sleep or energy, so they moved the finals to the mornings (8 AM as opposed to 11 AM). That thoroughly irritated me.

Anyways, Jazz Band is much harder then I thought it'd be. Only because we sight-read at tempo, and there are several passages with just chords written in (it takes me AT LEAST a minute to figure out some of the more insane chords - not four seconds).

Books

Our English class read The Adventures of Huck Finn. At first, I didn't understand why it was regarded as such a masterpiece, a classic American novel that Hemingway even identified as the the source all American literature. But now that we've discussed it in class...the themes of racism, of the hypocrisy of civilized society, of individualism, the satire, etc, it's probably one of my favorite books.

Jane Eyre is another recent favorite of mine. I enjoyed Bronte's elaborate rhetoric, her vivid descriptions, and the narrative - a riveting romance with powerful statements about women's equality. Most of all, I loved Jane, and the fact that Bronte rejected the conventional beautiful heroine and gave us instead an intelligent, independent, strong-willed female - a young woman who defied the stereotype of the domestic feminine ideal.
