The souks (open air marketplace) in Marrakech are quite literally a maze of streets lined with hundreds of shops selling every type of merchandise imaginable. I loved meandering through the streets and looking at all the spices, fruits, colorful cloths and scarves, purses, shoes, pots, and and other tiny trinkets. Though I could have done without the constant harrassment from shop owners and street peddlers - a nuisance that every foreign traveler in those regions has to deal with, but that I felt particularly prone to as a single female traveler.
It's amazing how the merchants probably speak at least 5 languages on a very basic level. Occasionally when some stranger bothered me I would try to speak Spanish, thinking they wouldn't understand me and leave me alone. Lo and behold, they would just reply to me in Spanish and so I would keep up the charade and managed to successfully pull off the guise of being Spanish.
