Jazz band tryouts were today. The first piano excerpt I had to prepare only had a melody written in for the right hand and these strange chords like Bb13 or Gb9 written in above. I've never had to improvise and create my own harmony and I've never been taught theory (outside the basics). Thankfully, I found a website that gave me all the chords, but it was still a bit unnerving.
I think I did well and hopefully I'll make the cut. Going in, I was sure that I wasn't going to make it because all the pianists from last year haven't graduated. But two of the four didn't even audition again, another I heard practicing and it seemed like he was sight-reading the pieces, while the other told me she wasn't going to bother with the chords on the left hand. All in all, I have a pretty good chance of playing for the jazz band this year.
I think I'll do more with this photo later - maybe try to give it ethereal, high
contrast look, although I'm not really sure how to go about that.
