Morocco - Jardin Marjorelle

Marrakesh, Morocco was the second city I visited during my month abroad after I graduated. It was certainly one of the more difficult trips I've had, but a culturally invigorating trip at the same time. As a single female tourist in what is a predominantly Muslim and conservative country, I was harassed beyond belief on the streets (more so than the average tourist who is pestered indefinitely to buy trinkets). In some ways, it reminded me of India, with its pungent and aromatic smells, chaotic streets, open markets, hot weather, and that complete 'otherness' you don't get when you travel to an industrialized nation.

Nevertheless, I'm glad it was a part of my itinerary and met some wonderful people there, like my gracious and hospitable CouchSurfing host Adil. Upon my arrival he prepared me sweet Moroccan mint tea and we ate homemade tagine together with his friends and family. He even offered me his room to sleep in, while he slept on an air mattress in another room. Then there were the incredibly kind individuals I met out and about - the merchants I purchased goods from, the waiter at the restaurant I ate at. I even convinced some people I was Spanish, which was fun!

And so, without further ado, here are photos from my first day in Morocco at the Jardin Majorelle.
