Senior Photos
I hate taking these things. I hate being in front of the camera rather than behind it and I hate having to do awkward poses that the photographer tells me to do since I don't know how to model. Additionally, I don't get to shop around for photographers since students at my school have to get portraits taken with a specific company in order for them to appear in the yearbook (although maybe it wouldn't matter since most people who take senior portraits suck anyways, just google in "senior portraits" to see the crap that's out there).
So yesterday, I had a retake of my senior portraits because I wasn't thrilled with the first set of photos. I thought I'd bring in some photos to my shoot so we could try to imitate the poses/style. The conversation I had with the photographer was a bit disconcerting though...
Me: I'd really like it if I could have photos with this type of depth of field
Him: These don't have a depth of field
Me: (What's he talking about? Does he mean they don't have a large depth of field?) Right...well...I'd just like the bokeh
Him: The what?
Me: You know, the blur in the background?
Him: Oh, well, the camera doesn't really do that. That's just a special effect, something you'd do in photoshop.
Me: Well, can't you just set your camera to a lower f-stop? I'm pretty sure the camera can do it...
Him: No no, you'll have to mess with image editing programs to get that effect. The camera doesn't do anything like that.
He also gave me the excuse that the short time period would prevent him from taking "these types of photos", although that should really only effect the quantity, not quality, of photos. So now I just have two weird sets of photos. I guess some of them are decent, and I'm probably being picky. But still, I'd much rather hire the people here on Xanga that I subscribe to - they're much more talented and creative, but none of them live in OH!
